Our first Berlin show of the new year is just round the corner: Next Saturday we’ll play a show at West Germany, organised by the Sunday Matinee crew. Our West Germany debut, actually.
The show will be a fundraiser for the running cost of The Sunday Matinee and its venue, which is currently being renovated by volunteers from the collective, until March.
We’ll be sharing the stage with our friends Abrißbirne and Jetzt werd ich dumm, all closely tied to the Matinee themselves, the highly estimated DJ Itacate (of Jejeje and Roto, as well as Los Nopales Taqueria Vegana) will spin records (or their virtual representations).
The Matinee will be celebrating its 10th birthday this summer, by the way. Can you believe we’ve been going for this long?!
For all of you who are hearing about The Sunday Matinee for the first time—the Matinee is a monthly series of Sunday afternoon shows here in Berlin that was originally started in August 2015 by Federica from Kitchen Leg Records, Davide and Angela from nunofyrbeeswax and Yyuri from the late, great Friedrichshain squat bar and venue XB Liebig. They were soon after joined by Jeff from Apostrophe and our own Jonathan.
The Matinee has always been non-smoking, non-profit, non-curated, child-friendly etc etc etc.
Our basic policy is that if you ask for a slot at the Matinee (we usually feature three acts at one Matinee), you’ll get it, it’s only a matter of time.
From the outset, the Matinee has been a place for newly formed bands to cut their teeth in front of an enthusiastic audience of likeminded and friendly music freaks, all deeply entangled in the various off-shoots of the Berlin DIY music and experimental noise underground themselves.
In theory, we might veto a band for apparent reasons you’d encounter at every other similar operation. In practice however, we haven’t had to turn down even one act in this whole first decade of Sunday Matinees.
We just seem to attract good, curious people.
For all these reasons stated, the Matinee must continue into the future and we’re happy to support the project with our appearance at West Germany next Saturday. Hoping to see some of you there!
